I’ve written previously about the basics of good nutrition and the importance of incorporating healthy plant foods into your menu plan. Adding beans (or legumes as they are often called) is a super way to do just that! They are an important source of plant proteins and one of the world’s oldest cultivated crops, going back as far as 7,000 years in some parts of the world. Lentils, peas, pinto beans, kidney beans, black beans, garbanzos and navy beans are some you may be familiar with. And the one that’s always stood out for me as having an odd name is the KIDNEY bean!

Turlock police to perform DUI patrols St. Patty's Day

TURLOCK - As a counter measure to all the "green beer" on sale St Patty’s Day, the Turlock Police Department's Avoid the 12 DUI Task Force will deploy additional DUI Roving Saturation Patrols into the cities of Turlock, Modesto, Oakdale, and Ceres March 17 - 19, in an ongoing campaign to take careless, dangerous drunk or "buzzed" drivers off the road before they crash.

"Whether you are meeting a few friends at the local pub after work or attending a house party, if you plan on drinking, never drive while impaired - and never let your friends drive if you think they are impaired. Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk," said Sgt. Neil Cervenka.

The extra Avoid DUI Saturation patrols will be supplementing regularly scheduled shift deployments planned for Thursday.

Stanislaus County Fair livestock exhibitor deadlines approaching

TURLOCK - Deadlines for independent junior livestock exhibitors are approaching quickly for the 2011 Stanislaus County Fair.

The deadline for Independent Exhibitors entering Market Beef at the Stanislaus County Fair is Thursday, March 17 at 5 p.m. The Deadline for Independent Exhibitors entering market sheep, pigs, goats, breeding livestock, rabbits and poultry is Monday, May 16 at 5 p.m. No online entries will be accepted for independent exhibitors. All entries and required information must be turned into the Fair office in person or by mail by the above deadlines.

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts to perform at Stanislaus County Fair July 22

TURLOCK - Joan Jett and the Blackhearts will bring their "Bad Reputation" to the stage at this year’s Stanislaus County Fair. The punk-rock group will perform on Friday, July 22 on the Budweiser Variety Free Stage at 8:30 p.m. The concert will be hosted by 104.1 THE HAWK and is free with the price of fair admission.

"Veteran punk-rock lovers won’t want to miss this amazing show," said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. "Joan Jett and the Blackhearts are sure to bring some great energy the Fair’s Budweiser Variety Free Stage."

As the leader of the hard-rocking Blackhearts, Jett has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics "I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll," "I Hate Myself For Loving You" and "Crimson and Clover." Jett was one of only two women named to Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time.

Central Valley boy, mom found safe; boyfriend held

PORTERVILLE, CA. (AP) - An Amber Alert was cancelled after a baby and his mother were found safe hours after authorities said they had been kidnapped from their Central Valley home.

Tulare County Sheriff Bill Wittman told KFSN-TV a tip led police Tuesday night to a home in the town of Poplar.

The 8-month-old boy and 18-year-old mother were found there along with the boyfriend accused of abducting them.

The boyfriend, 23-year-old Pedro Mosqueda, was placed under arrest.

The Tulare County Sheriff's Office says Mosqueda kidnapped the pair around 2 a.m. Tuesday in Porterville, a few miles east of where they were found.

Turlock man pleas to online sexual predation

FRESNO, CA - A Turlock man pleaded guilty on Monday to threatening a girl to send him sexually explicit pictures of her.

Brian Robert Garrett, 26, was arrested on March 15, 2010 for using social networking sites to threaten a minor into sending him sexually explicit pictures of herself, said Lauren Horwood, spokeswoman for the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California.

Garrett pretended to be a 15-year-old boy during online chats with the victim, who lived in Wisconsin, and offered to fly her to California, according to court records. He also bought and sent the victim a digital camera so she could send him sexually explicit pictures, Horwood said.
