University of the Pacific receives $1.3 million Upward Bound grant for Edison High School

Project to help south Stockton students with applying for college, financial aid, other services

University of the Pacific has been awarded a $1.3 million five-year federal grant for an Upward Bound project that will put eligible Edison High School students on a college-bound trajectory. The project will provide needed instruction, tutoring, advising, and assistance with applying for financial aid and college to help students graduate high school, enroll in college and earn a degree.

“It’s very exciting for all of us to be partnering with the Stockton Unified School District on what should be a very powerful, transformative opportunity to help Edison students make it through high school and onto college,” said Patrick Day, Pacific’s vice president for Student Life. “Upward Bound is a strong, proven program and will give students a great chance to succeed and someday give back to their communities.”

Sutter’s Fort to present “Hands on History: A Community of Many Faces” on May 20

Continuing a popular series of interactive and fun “Hands on History” activities each month, Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park (SHP) will present a special “Hands on History: A Community of Many Faces” event on Saturday, May 20, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fort visitors will be delighted to see the recently completed restoration of the historic walls, gates and blacksmith shop plus have the opportunity to step back in time to the 1840s to celebrate and honor the richly diverse cultures represented at the Fort. In fact, the Gold Rush of 1849 brought tens of thousands of people to California from all over the world. But even before the first gold seekers arrived, Sutter’s Fort was already a melting pot of ethnic, social and cultural diversity. In the New Helvetia Diary (the daily log book of Sutter’s Fort), there are at least 30 different groups of Native people mentioned as having visited the Fort and/or provided labor for John Sutter.
