2 men found dead in Hughson home after standoff

HUGHSON, CA - Two men were found dead inside a Hughson home after a standoff Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies, SWAT and hostage negotiators were outside a home on the 1900 block of 7th Street and evacuated a couple of neighbors, Deputy Raj Singh said.

Deputies closed off 7th Street from Fox Road and E. Hatch Road.

The incident started after deputies responded to a call outside of Oakdale on Eaton Road of a suicidal man in a pickup truck with a gun around 1:18 p.m. While deputies were in route, the man drove away from the location.

Singh said deputies spotted the vehicle and began to follow the man; they attempted a traffic stop on Yosemite Avenue, but the man refused to yield.

However, the man stopped in front of the home, exited the truck and went inside.

Singh said deputies heard several gunshots from inside the home; they believe people were inside the home when the shots were fired.

$1M bail set for mom charged with child's murder

MODESTO, CA - A Turlock woman charged in connection with her 2-year-old daughter's death, appeared in Stanislaus County court on Tuesday for arraignment.

Brandy Devine, 25, was arrested on Monday after her daughter, Stephanie Torres, was found dead inside her Turlock home on the 1100 block of N. Denair Avenue.

According to the criminal complaint, Devine was under the influence of methamphetamine when her daughter died on or about and sometime between July 13-16.

Police responded to the Turlock home on Monday around 12:30 p.m. after receiving a call about a child that was non-responsive.

TURLOCK, CA - A mother is charged with murder after her 2-year-old daughter was found dead inside her Turlock home on the 1100 block of N. Denair Avenue, according to Officer Mayra Lewis.

Brandy Devine, 25, was arrested on Monday and is being held at the Stanislaus County jail without bail, according to jail records.

Neighbor Lydia Whitworth heard screams coming from Devine's Turlock home on Monday afternoon and ran to help. 

"When I opened the door Brandy was just there hysterical saying 'Something's happened. The baby, the baby," recalled Whitworth.

Devine told Whitworth the child was dead.

Whitworth said Devine  was the only adult inside the home. In a bedroom, Whitworth found 2-year-old Stephanie inside a crib. The toddler was wearing a shirt and had a dirty diaper, Whitworth said.

UPDATE: Man found dead after Turlock standoff is named

TURLOCK, CA - A nearly 3 and half hour standoff ended after deputies found William Paul Nazar, 44, dead on the property of his Turlock home.

Deputies responded to East Avenue and Verduga Road Wednesday around 3 p.m. after the suspect's family called deputies because he was making suicidal threats, Deputy Raj Singh said.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the man fired shots at them, but did not injure anyone. Singh said deputies returned fire, but are unsure if they hit the man.

The man retreated back into the home, where he may have had a high powered rifle and other weapons inside with him.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the home and blocked off several streets nearby.

Singh said the family left the home after shot were fired and safely made it to the deputies' perimeter line.

Manteca man shot and killed; suspect arrested

MANTECA, CA - A Manteca man was killed early Monday morning near East Highway 120.

Sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene at around 2:00 A.M. and found the victim, 23-year-old Andrew Spino, suffering from a gunshot wound.

Spino was transported to a Modesto hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

After an investigation sheriff's detectives arrested and booked Jay Prater on murder charges, according to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office.

The investigation is ongoing.

Man dies after swallowing '8 ball' of meth

JAMESTOWN, CA - A man is dead after swallowing 3.5 grams of meth while in the custody of Tuolumne County sheriff's deputies in early May.

An autopsy report released Monday, showed that James Jones had 16 times the level of a "potentially toxic" amount of meth in his system that caused his death, Tuolumne County sheriff's Sgt. Jeff Wilson said.

Jones was strip searched by deputies after they found a glass pipe for smoking meth on his person during the booking process. Wilson said during the strip search, a deputy saw a white item in Jones mouth and ordered him to spit it out.

Instead, he swallowed it.

Jones was transported to Sonora Regional Medical Center for treatment, where he admitted that he swallowed an "8 ball" of meth.

Wilson said Jones died at the hospital despite life saving measures by hospital staff.

Daughter, 18, to face charges in parents' murder, attempted murder

MODESTO, CA - The daughter of a Denair couple she is accused of stabbing, her father fatally, will stand trial.

Following a preliminary hearing, a Stanislaus County Superior Court judge ruled there was sufficient evidence to try 18-year-old Shanna Wills for the murder of Kenneth Wills, 62, and Susan Wills on Mother's Day, May 14, 2011.

Shanna Wills, who was 17 at the time of the attack, will be arraigned on murder, attempted murder and assault charges when she is arraigned in July. She is being tried as an adult.

A motive for the stabbings has not been revealed.
