Reading volunteer opportunities available through Hands on Sacramento

SACRAMENTO -- Hands on Sacramento is a program of Community Link (formerly Community Services Planning Council) and offers countless opportunities for residents to lend a hand and volunteer. Through their online matching system, Hands On Sacramento strives to inspire, equip and mobilize individuals and groups for meaningful volunteer experiences that change our community!

As the regions full-service volunteer action center, Hands on Sacramento welcomes new community partners looking for volunteers.  Whether your agency has one time or ongoing needs for volunteers, you can post opportunities on the Hands on Sacramento website.  Over 16,000 Sacramento residents are registered and looking to help!

Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration at the Keyes Library

Keyes Library invites story-lovers of all ages to revel in reading and rhyme with a Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration on Thursday, March 12 at 3 p.m. Participants can make a “Cat in the Hat” mask and a Dr. Seuss pop-up toy! Children can also play Find the Hat to receive a prize.  Birthday cake, light refreshments, and prize drawings will also be available throughout the afternoon.

Theodor Geisel, who wrote under the pen name Dr. Seuss, has played an important role in charming children everywhere into reading. Celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday is a way for libraries, schools, and parents to underscore the importance and joy of reading.

This program is free and open to the community with support from donations, large and small, to the Friends of the Keyes Library. The Keyes Library is located on 4420 Maud Ave. For more information, please call 664-8006.

Readers Arrgghh Amazing!  Celebrate all things pirate with Pirate Day at the Keyes Library on Thursday, September 18 at 3 p.m. Children can make pirate hats, play pin the eyepatch on the pirate, and pose as a pirate in pictures. Children can also enter a contest to win a pirate ship kite. Pirate books will also be displayed and available for checkout.

A Seussical Celebration at the Keyes Library

Winter Fun at the Keyes Library

Join the Keyes Library during the month of December for several merry and family-friendly events for individuals of all ages!

Children and teens can participate in the Keyes Book Bingo from Dec. 2 through Dec. 31. Pick up a bingo card from the library and follow the instructions to win candy and prizes. The Keyes Library will also have a grand prize drawing for those participants that turn in a completed bingo card! Two winners will each receive the grand prize of a scooter with lighted wheels.

Aspiring chefs can participate in the What’s Cooking?: Recipe Exchange from Dec. 2 through Dec. 31. Participants can come by the library for holiday cooking ideas and pick up the recipes of the month! While at the library turn in your favorite recipe to be entered into the contest for the recipe of the month in January! Two recipes will be chosen for January’s Recipes of the Month.

Join fellow book lovers at the Riverbank Library on Tuesday, April 23 at 4 p.m. for the Riverbank Library Book Club. April’s book club pick is “The Ghost of Hannah Mendes” by Naomi Ragen. This story of sisters journeying through Europe to find the lost pages of an ancestor’s journal will leave readers captivated.

Join fellow book lovers at Turlock Library on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 10:30 a.m. for the Turlock Library Book Club. February’s book club pick is “The Art of Racing in the Rain” by Garth Stein. The story of Enzo, a dog, and his human companions will leave readers mesmerized.
